Competition, currency woes hit auto cos' global ambitions

UMBAI: Auto and two-wheeler makers like Bajaj Auto, TVS, Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors are finding it difficult to scale up their global

manufacturing plans given that most of them are currently loss-making. Recessionary trends and a fluctuating currency have hurt the cost structures of these plants, making them highly unprofitable.

TVS and Bajaj Auto, which set up two-wheeler operations in Indonesia, incurred losses of Rs 88 crore and Rs 48 crore, respectively, in 2008-09. Tata Motors, which has a pick-up plant in Thailand, posted a loss of Rs 89 crore for FY09, while Ashok Leyland, which has a bus-making unit at Ras Al Khaimah and a truck-making plant in Czechoslovakia called Avia, are apparently incurring losses.

There are well-entrenched global players in these markets and it is difficult to compete with them with a limited product portfolio, said M Sabarad, senior analyst at Centrum, a Mumbai-based broking firm. After October 2008, the retail financing companies suffered a liquidity crisis and tightened credit norms. Interest rates were increased and it affected the automobile sales. This was a major hindrance affecting the scalability of most overseas plants, said a senior official from Bajaj Auto.

AP govt invites Peugeot to set up firm

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday went all out to woo French car maker Peugeot, with chief minister K Rosaiah formally asking

the French government to convince the automobile firm to set up its manufacturing firm in the city.

"The AP government has offered to allocate around 800 acres of land near the Shamshabad airport to Peugeot along with a 'suitable' package of fiscal incentives and infrastructure benefits," Sam Bob, the industries secretary told ET.

An indication that Peugeot was inclined to setting up a facility in Andhra Pradesh came from a French delegation led by the trade minister, Ms Anne-Marie Idrac during their meeting with the chief minister. The technical teams of the company have already selected Hyderabad after assessing other locations. Peugeot began evaluating locations for its car project in India a few months ago.

The company is understood to be looking at an investment of Rs 1,500 crore for the project. Tamil Nadu was also on the company’s radar, amid expectations that Peugeot will roll-out low cost cars in emerging markets like India by 2010. It is also not clear whether the French auto major will bring in the Peugeot or the Citroen brand first.

The global slowdown in the automotive sector has delayed the expansion plans of several car makers including Peugeot. The trade minister is understood to have communicated to the AP chief minister that the car maker is yet to take a decision on the timing of the investment though Hyderabad figured as their top choice.

"Decisions on product portfolio is expected to be taken after the finalization of the location. But, the company intends to launch both Peugeot and Citroen products in a limited time span," said a person familiar with the development told ET earlier.

"We have firmed up the incentives to be given to Peugeot if they set up their facility here. However, the company is yet to furnish a detailed project report," B Sam Bob, principal secretary industries told ET.
If the French car maker decides to set up its facility in the state, it will be the first major investment by an automobile maker in AP. Several attempts were made to woo other car makers including Tata Nano.

The state had offered a Rs 300-crore cash compensation to Tata Motors for re-locating Nano from Singur and setting up an integrated plant here. To sweeten the deal, it also offered 1,000 acres of free land in Hyderabad, Vizag, Hindupur and Tada in Nellore district, and a slew of fiscal incentives making investment on the project virtually free.
But the car eventually rolled out from Sanand in Gujarat.

Hyundai bets big on used car business

Hyundai bets big on used car business
NEW DELHI: With its used car business growing faster, Hyundai Motor India has taken a fresh initiative to focus on Hyundai Advantage – the arm
dealing with the used car business. Hyundai buys all the cars of any make and any model under the exchange scheme.

With the aim to cater to the needs of exchange customers, Hyundai Advantage was launched in 2006 with six dealers across six prominent locations in India. “Today, Hyundai Advantage boasts of 69 operational dealers across 49 locations in India and the plan is to take the number up to 108 across 59 cities by the end of 2009 and to 200 operational dealers by the end of 2010,” sais Arvind Saxena, Sr V-P, marketing & sales, HMIL.

Saxena said, “The size of the used car business in India is approximately 1.3 million cars per annum. This number is expected to grow exponentially in the next few years. We want to aggressively focus on Hyundai Advantage, as it will not only help us retain our old customers through exchange and upgrade schemes but will also make an interesting business proposition given the phenomenal market for used cars in India.”

According to him, strict quality standards are maintained to ensure that the used cars sold are of a superior quality and the buyer gets complete peace of mind. “Each used car is put through a rigorous series of checks, which covers every aspect of the car’s functioning. Hence, each customer is assured of a certified used car in very good condition,” he said.

Cadbury's minority share buyback plan runs into trouble

MUMBAI: The residual minority shareholders of Cadbury India are up in arms against the multinational’s move to buy them out through a special
resolution at the company’s extraordinary general meeting next month, at Rs 1,340 per share.

These shareholders together own around 2.4% in the company, and are planning to file an intervention petition in the Bombay High Court opposing the move. The resolution can be easily approved as the promoters need only a 75% majority.
After that, the company will have to seek the formal approval of the Bombay High Court for reducing the equity base.

"We are planning to file an intervention petition in High Court on behalf of investors once the resolution is passed," Hinesh Doshi, V-P, Investors’ Grievances Forum. "We have received from investors that Cadbury has filed a petition under Section 100 before the High Court, Mumbai for reduction of capital by paying off minority shareholders and extinguishing all their shares," he said.

Section 100 of Companies Act, which deals with special resolution for reduction of share capital says that a company limited by shares or a company limited by guarantee and having a share capital, may, if so authorised by its articles, by special resolution, reduce its share capital in any way. When contacted by ET, Cadbury India’s spokesperson said: "It is premature to comment on this."

According to lawyers familiar with the delisting process, several judgements including those of Bombay High Court have approved of companies buying out residual minority shareholders. These investors have never approached the Supreme Court. Lawyers say it was unlikely that the minority shareholders would succeed in the court in view of the settled legal position.

The EGM for the share buyback will be held on November 16. "Subject to confirmation by Bombay High Court, the paid up equity share capital of the company be and it is hereby reduced by paying off/returning to the holders of the equity shares (other than the promoters viz., Cadbury Schweppes Overseas and Cadbury Mauritius) a sum of Rs 1,340 per share," said the notice to shareholders.

Once companies get delisted, they fall outside the purview of capital market regulator — Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The ministry of company affairs is the nodal authority for all companies, listed and unlisted, and is also responsible for making amendments to the Companies Act. "This is an indirect way for compulsory buyback without shareholders consent,' says Mr Doshi.

"Why are delisted companies hell-bent on removing a few small shareholders?' asks Aspi Bhesania, a minority shareholder in Cadbury India.

According to industry sources, the company will discontinue the old F-series engines in both Alto and Wagon R and replace them with its new K-series engine, which is Bharat Stage IV complaint.

When contacted a Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) spokesperson said, "the successful K series engines will be mounted on more models in a phased manner," without specifying details and timeline for the change in engines.

Alto is MSI's best selling model. In November last year it crossed one-million mark in domestic market, while Wagon R also accounted for a good number to its compact car sales.

The company's newer models such A-Star, Ritz and the new Estilo are powered by K-series engines, which the company claims are more fuel efficient and have lesser emission.

With 11 cities in India scheduled to move to stricter Bharat Stage (BS) IV emission norms from the current BS III by April next year, MSI has been preparing itself for the change.

It has already upgraded its mid-sized sedan SX4 to make it BS IV compatible and it will be shortly launched in the market. A similar upgradation for premium compact car Swift and entry-level sedan DZire is also on the cards but the company has decided not to upgrade its oldest model M800 to meet the new emission norms.

2009 BMW Z4 launched in India!

BMW India has brought in the new latest international version of its acclaimed Z4 roadster into the country. Launched today in Mumbai, the Z4 will demand a price tag of Rs 59 lakh ex-showroom for the Z4 sDrive35i variant.

The sDrive35i is the 2009 Z4's top-of-the-line variant, featuring BMW's new dual-clutch 7-speed automatic gearbox. The three-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine makes a stonking 306PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. In cue with Beemer's sporty traditions, the new car also has Dynamic Drive control that let's the user choose between Normal, Sport and Sport + modes.

BMW already has its 6-series convertible on sale in India, and even though the Z4 shares its top-down traits with the 6, that is where the similarities end. The Z4 forms a completely different class of cars, smaller in size, a true two-seater in roadster fashion, but with great power and very manageable dimensions for nimble and agile handling. The 2009 model also has a major improvement over its predecessor - the car now comes with a foldable hard-top roof, and hence replaces both the coupe and cabriolet versions of the earlier model.

Of late, BMW has been threatening Mercedes-Benz to take the top spot in India as far German luxury car makers go. A lot of the shift has to do with the fact that an increasing number of buyers have begun to associate not only luxury but also performance and style with German cars. A sporty and chic model like the Z4 is sure to not only fortify that threat, but also diversify BMW portfolio in India to a much more well-rounded one that goes beyond just luxury cars.

We'll have the roadest of the hot new roadster, besides special features about the car on our website and in our monthly magazine soon, so stay logged in and watch the stands!

Intel to launch new Corei5 processor line

MANILA, Philippines - Intel is set to unveil its new Corei5 processor line as well as its latest Corei7 models to the local market on Thursday, a few days after the worldwide launch.
Intel Core is the flagship processor brand of the world’s biggest chipmaker. It has launched top-of-the-line Corei7, the first processor line that uses the Intel Nehalem micro architecture and successor to the Intel Core 2 family, in November last year.
While Corei7 is for high-level computing, the new Corei5 is a mid-range processor with key features as adaptable performance, smart multi-tasking capability and new micro-architecture.
Another processor in the Intel Core family — the Core i3 processor for entry-level computing — will be unveiled in 2010. Intel said this would complete the Intel Core family brand to suit the needs of every kind of computer user.
Ricky Banaag, Intel country manager, clarified in a media briefing that the i7, i5 and i3 modifiers to the Intel Core brand provide differentiation and make it easier for the computing public to choose the right processor for their needs. They also integrate the Intel Core offerings into one brand family construct.
“i3, i5 and i7 are not brands but modifiers or identifiers to the Intel Core brand that specify the relative levels of performance and features within the Intel Core processor family,” Banaag said. “Core here does not refer to dual Core or quad Core but refers to the flagship brand.”
The other classic brands remain the same — Intel Pentium for basic computing, Intel Celeron for affordable entry-level computing, and Intel Atom for notebooks, net tops and other devices with small form factors.
“But if you want the latest technology, the flagship is Core for both desktops and notebooks,” Banaag said.
There is a greater demand now for high-end processors, said Jerome Matti, Intel Philippines marketing manager.
In the last four years alone, he said a lot has happened to the industry — YouTube was launched in 2006, Face book extended beyond college students also in 2006, HD content is now available online via ABC, NBC and Hulu, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) now has 14.7-million users, digital cameras have gone from 2.1 megapixels to 10+ megapixels.
“If you own a machine more than three years old, it’s likely you are not enjoying a great experience,” he said.
Fact is, 37 percent of computers in use in the country are more than three years old, and more people are seeing the need to upgrade their machines. At the heart of an upgrade is the processor, which is the “brain” of the computer.
“The processor is the most fundamental part of the computer because it affects how fast the computer runs and how many applications you can run simultaneously,” Matti explained.
By rationalizing the branding of its processor brand offerings, Intel hopes to enable computers to determine the kind of technology appropriate for their needs and simplify the purchase decision process.
Intel executives, however, are mum on the technical specifications of the Core i5 and the new models of Core i7 that will be unveiled pending the official launch, saying Intel will be introducing new processors on both the existing Nehalem and new Westmere designs.

BMW Z4 Set for October Debut

After some brief speculation and a lot of prayers to the car gods, BMW India it seems has decided to answer our prayers and in October the company plans on introducing one of the most desired cars from their stable-the Z4 roadster.

The Z4 is literally BMW's take on what a roadster ought to be. It's got the aura of classic roadsters complimented by the latest technology and gadgets. A lot has gone into the design of the car and even here you will find the 'classic meeting the future' look, for in true classic fashion the roadster boasts of a long stretched hood and short overhangs, of course the future aspect comes in from the sculpted flamed body panels and the pronounced wheel arches at the rear.

The interiors boast of low seats, which have incidentally been placed closer to the rear axle in order to provide great road feedback to the driver as well as stick with the roadster design theme. Loads of leather and that typical BMW quality of fit and finish can be found in abundance on the inside. Elegance meets sport is the underlying theme here and the Z4 is touted to fit that shoe with ease.

BMW_Z4_two

One of the most interesting features of the Z4 roadster is its retractable hardtop. The new Z4 happens to be the first BMW roadster to ever come with a hardtop. The hardtop is made up of two aluminum shells that are capable of closing in around 20 seconds. Whether you cruise around with the roof down or with it covered the Z4 has a striking look that cannot be matched by many. It's a modern day classic.

In terms of engine choices, BMW India has not disclosed too many details, however looking at what is available under the hood internationally does shed some light on things to come. One thing is certain about the engine option and that is the fact that no matter which Z4 you choose, you will receive a straight six under the hood.? Internationally the Z4 is available with three engine choices, namely, the Z4sDrive 23i which churns out 204 hp, the sDrive 30i which makes 258 hp and the sDrive35i which churns out a whopping 306 hp.

In terms transmission options, BMW offers a 6 speed manual box on the Z4, however considering the fact that none of the BMW?s in India have ever come in with a manual, the chances of seeing this great 6 speed box is most likely out of the question.? On the other hand the seven speed sport automatic double clutch transmission which is only available on the Z4 sDrive35i does sound like a lot of fun and fits in with BMW India?s plans of only introducing automatics for the country.

India has not been a traditional market for roadsters; however the likes of the Mercedes SLK and Porsche Boxter and Cayman are set to get some rather stiff Bavarian competition in the days to come.

TATA MANZA coming on 14th October

Tata Manza, a new and updated version of Tata's Indigo Vista is all set to be launched on 14 October. The new TATA Manza, will borrow design cues from its sibling the Indica Vista-thanks to both models sharing the same platform.

Word on the street is that the new car will also share similar parts and mechanicals as those found on the new Fiat Linea as both Tata and Fiat are looking at furthering their synergies, even in product development. Not much detail can be found on the engines, but the now famous 1.3 litre Fiat engine is bound to be part of the line up.

The pricing of the Tata Manza will obviously be lower than that of the Linea, as the company's have an understanding on price points and do not intend on eating into each other's space, despite having a similar product line up.

The new Tata Manza is bound to be a stunner for the entry level sedan segment, and considering the amount of space the car will offer, combined with its new bold looks, it might just be the car to save up for, especially if you are considering a 3 box car and want to spend minimum rupee for it.

Vodafone to launch new marketing campaign

Telecom giant Vodafone is set to launch a new global marketing campaign scrapping the old tagline, "Make the most of now" and introducing the new "Power to you" positioning, in line with its plans to shift branding strategy in four years.

The new marketing campaign is aimed at popularizing new multimedia services and promoting the use of smartphones among masses. Vodafone will launch the new service, called Vodafone 360, in this week, in a bid to compete with rival Apple's iPhone applications. The service will provide a common platform for a number of social networking sites, including Twitter and Facebook.

The Italian Chief Executive of Vodafone, Vittorio Colao said: "The centre of this company is marketing and human resources. It is not the brand talking any more and telling the customer what to do. It is the customer who will decide."

He said that the marketing campaign is more than a marketing push. He wants the firm to get its brand and image chiseled by carrying out biggest ever overhaul in almost five years.

The proposed merger of T-Mobile and Orange may push down Vodafone from its top position in UK.

Additional Quality

Teufel Announces Extensive Additions to Product Range
Author Andy Vandervell
Published 2nd Oct 2009

We've seen a great number of Teufel systems in the year that the German loudspeaker specialist has been trading in UK, most of them extremely good. Known for only selling its products directly to the consumer, offering an eight week return guarantee for unsatisfied customers and 12 year warranties, its combination of excellent quality and competitive prices has gone down well.
While most companies were showing their new wares at IFA in September, Teufel, in keeping with its unorthodox approach, has only just announced its large range of new products. And we were with Teufel in Berlin to inspect them with our own eyes and ears.

Most impressive was the company's latest addition to its so far unseen (by us at least) PC speaker range. A 2.0 channel, full-range set, Teufel has yet to set a price for its Concept B 200 USB speakers [above], but did say they were likely to hit a price between 200 to 250 Euros. A lot of money, perhaps, but when you hear them you'll quickly think otherwise. We were instantly impressed by the great clarity, neutral tone and imposing power of this set, which comprise three drivers per channel powered by an external amplifier unit.

As suggested by the name, they connect to your PC via USB, thus bypassing the potentially noisy output of your integrated sound card. Of course you can still connect to it in the normal manner, while you can also use the amplifier unit as a USB hub thanks to its additional USB ports.

Though Teufel isn't your typical tech company, it's no less partial to a "world first" than any other, boasting "the smallest THX Ultra 2 system in the world" in the System 8 THX Ultra 2 [above]. Similar in makeup to the Recommended Award winning System 9 THX Ultra 2 Speakers, as the headline claim alludes to, the System 8s are simply a lot smaller, in theory offering high quality performance in a more convenient package. No pricing is available as yet, but the full-size System 9s cost as much as £3,500 for the full set, so file this under ‘aspirational'.

Those with more modest pretentions should find Teufel's new Impaq 4000 5.1 home cinema system [above] to their liking. Again, we don't have pricing just yet, but expect this offering to be a good deal more affordable. It has all the usual features (1080p upscaling, DivX and MP3 playback , Dolby and DTS decoding), but also includes an AM/FM radio tuner with RDS support.
Finally, if your needs sit somewhere between insanely expensive and cheap, plug and play home cinema, then the Theatre 100 [above] is probably for you. Another 5.1 set, the Theatre 100s are due to replace the company's Theatre 1 speakers. Teufel has gone for a classical dark wood appearance, supplemented by judicious use of high glossy black - a combination we definitely approve of.

Key to their appeal are the satellite speakers, which offer full-range stereo output for use as Hi-Fi speakers, providing a flexible and affordable option for your living room. Another important feature is the center channel tweeter, which is mounted above the sub driver for flat, consistent frequency response.
All these new products should be appearing on the company's website in the next one or two weeks, with all going on sale in November.
