The world's largest multi-touch wall

We have all been fussing about a multi-touch table all this while, taking in all the good things that the added technology could bring into our lives. How about a 425 square meter wall to fill your senses? The wall uses a laser light plane illumination to capture inputs by users. It can serve up to 80 touchponts. Beat that.
The World's Largest Multi-Touch Wall will be placed near a race track in Nurburg, Germany. Do check the video of the same.

What New Product Will Apple Release in 2010?

Apple said this afternoon that it sold 7.4 million iPhones in its most recent fiscal quarter, 7 percent more than the same three-month period a year earlier and a whopping 43 percent more on a sequential basis. The numbers illustrate two key points: Mobile is indeed the future and reducing the base iPhone model to $99 is helping unit sales, in a big way.

Meanwhile, much to the chagrin of Microsoft and its ecosystem of partners, Apple sold 3.05 million Mac computers, a 17 percent rise over its previous fiscal fourth quarter. That’s not too shabby for a premium computer line during down times.

More interesting than the past however, is the future. This quote from Steve Jobs ought to have all of the Apple rumor sites salivating:

“We are thrilled to have sold more Macs and iPhones than in any previous quarter,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve got a very strong lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010.”
The iPhone is historically on a summer refresh schedule, so it’s a safe bet that next summer sees an iPhone update, not to mention the inclusion of a camera in the iPod touch line at some point. But one of those “really great new products” could well be the larger tablet device that’s been bandied around in earnest this past year. Surely it’s not a netbook because Apple doesn’t see a way to make a quality device at low netbook prices. Then again, Apple is known to redefine developing product markets. Add in the trend that more non-phone devices are falling under the subsidy model and it’s easy to believe that 2010 might see another portable computing device from Cupertino in the $300-$500 range.

And of course, iPod sales continue their slow decline — Apple sold 10.2 million iPods in the most recent three-month period, down 8 percent from the same quarter a year earlier and 7 percent from its fiscal 2009 third quarter. Back in June of 2008, I read the handwriting on the wall by saying standalone music players were dying a slow, painful death due to the rise of smartphones.

Nokia X6, if you’re anti-ExpressMusic

Nokia have opened new doors for audiophiles to make the most of their cellphones. Thanks to the Nokia X6, we can hope for some serious music playback this time round, and hopefully, a better interface than what the 5800 provided. The latter was good enough while it lasted and remained new, but now with all the better, newer interfaces coming into play we were looking for a replacement sooner or later.

The X6 will come with a bundle of features like a

Audi's monstrous Q7 is all set to be more monstrous than ever with Audi plonking in a massive turbo-charged V12 diesel unit under that muscular hood.

With 495 PS and a gut wrenching 1026.5 Nm of torque, this behemoth will be just short of climbing walls. So you get sportscar performance with seven people on board along with tons of street presence. Expect to pay northwards of a crore to get one though.

acer mobile

Acer has launched three new touchscreen phones in India including beTouch e101, beTouch e200 and neoTouch. The new smartohones are priced between Rs.12,000 and Rs. 35,000.

The cheapest phone in this series is the beTouch e101, which sports with a 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen and runs with the new Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. However, this set won’t create magic as the other sets which were released earlier. The set has 256MB of RAM and 512 MB of ROM associated with it.

This set comes with a 2 megapixel in-built camera. But the lack of autofocus option disappoints the user to some extent.

The beTouch e101smartphone is a very simple phone with some of the basic features. But the set lacks some of the advanced networking features like the Wi-Fi and 3G.However, GPRS (EDGE) and Bluetooth facilities will be there to perform some of the basic functions.

Nano production to begin at Sanand in fourth quarter

NEW DELHI: The upcoming Gujarat factory for the Nano will start trial production in the fourth quarter of this financial year, Tata Motors said on
Tuesday.

PM Telang, India MD for Tata Motors, said work was on at the new factory site for the Nano at Sanand (near Ahmedabad) where the company decided to move late last year after it had to vacate the Singur land in West Bengal, following protests over land acquisition spearheaded by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress.

Telang said full-scale production at Sanand could begin in six to eight months. The company plans to set up an initial annual production capacity of around 2.5 lakh units at Sanand, which can be expanded to 5 lakh units. Telang said the current makeshift production site for the Nano, at Pantnagar in Uttarakhand, was churning out around 3000-4000 units per month.

The company had moved to Sanand in October last year where it will set up a mother plant for the budget car, apart from vendor park, on an area of about 1100 acres

Indian electric car pioneer plans biggest plug-in car plant

NEW DELHI: Chetan Maini, the engineer who pioneered India's first electric car, had his eureka moment two decades ago when he drove a vehicle
fuelled by solar power across the blazing Australian outback.

Now Maini, the man behind Reva Electric Car Co., is building in southern India what he says will be the world's biggest factory making battery-powered city commuter cars.

"It's the first attempt at mass production of a green car," said Maini, who studied hybrid electric technology at California's Stanford University and developed the no-clutch, no-gears Reva as head of a 75-member engineering team.

"With growing climate change awareness, I think we're at the tipping point for electric cars," Maini told AFP in an interview.

The drive in 1990 which set Maini on his career track was a General Motors-sponsored solar-powered race in which his car finished third, beating many of the global car companies.

"Driving across the continent on the sun's energy made me think how we could use alternative energy to power cars in the Indian context," he said.

"When I saw how our cities were getting polluted, I realised employing clean, alternative energy could make a lot of sense -- we needed to develop this kind of technology," he said.

Maini has put some 3,000 of the zero-polluting three-door Revas on the roads in India and Britain -- where it is known as the G-Wiz -- in the eight years since the company started selling the cars.

The Reva was formed in 1994 as a joint venture between the family-owned Maini Group and AEV of the United States to manufacture environment-friendly vehicles.

But it took seven years for the first Reva to go on sale as Maini and his team worked on the design.

Afterward, "we were in a test marketing phase, trying to see how people used electric cars, what were their needs. But that's now over and we're ready to move to the mass-market stage," Maini said.

In September, Reva got a big endorsement when GM announced it would team up with the tiny car company to develop a plug-in version of the best-selling GM Spark mini-car as the US giant embraces electrically powered driving

What Microhoo means to you

The deal Microsoft and Yahoo made today to combine their ad and search efforts has its roots in the mid-1990s, near the dawn of the Web.

It was then Yahoo CEO Tim Koogle who made the decision that Yahoo would become a “portal,” a gateway to an internal Web world. All the smart guys in New York and in the mainstream media were urging this. Search, they said, was limited, it was techie, it was obscure. The real growth was in media.

Around the same time Microsoft decided it must “embrace and extend” its monopoly from Windows to Office to the Web, through Internet Explorer. Rather than selling what it made, it would bundle its monopoly products with its browser and dominate that way. This led to its antitrust case, and it has embraced, even extended itself into, the legal profession ever since.

So it was mistakes made long ago that created the new Microhoo. Yahoo will become the salesman and public face for Microsoft’s technology. The hope is this will slowly eliminate the technology, legal, and marketing mistakes both are known for, relying on the two firms’ complementary strengths.

That’s the theory. Many remain skeptical.

But there’s a more important lesson for you here. This lies in the nature of scaling, where Moore’s Law meets what some call Moore’s Second Law, the idea that as technology grows and scales it forces consolidation, and leads to limits on competition.

We see this in the chip market, where the number of viable companies declines as the cost to fabricate chips goes up. And we’re seeing it in search, where the increased complexity of the task means fewer-and-fewer search firms are viable.

This is not peculiar to technology. It’s true with any complex, mass-marketed product. The failures of Preston Tucker and, more recently, John DeLorean, show that the problems of scaling eventually snuff-out start-ups in the car market as well. At some point only government support can get a newcomer into the game.

In technology, however, this happens at Internet speeds.

Google, which picked up Yahoo’s rejected business plan in 1998, went in less than a decade from being a feisty start-up to one of the largest, and wealthiest, companies on the face of the globe. Now it has just one scaled competitor, along with small fry and regional competitors.

This pace is only accelerating. Any start-up must be ready for explosive growth, and hyper-evolution of the competitive environment, corporate lives measured in dog years.

Most people in the tech business understand this intellectually, but expecting it, planning for it, embracing it, those are challenges not just for entrepreneurs, but for customers and government as well.

Microhoo, uniting companies with a combined age less than my own 54 years, will now face months of scrutiny by U.S. and international regulators. When they’re finally finished, will the resulting company even be viable? Or will the growth of Baidu have made such scrutiny irrelevant?

Rolls Royce Phantom may get electric in 2010

Range Rover Model

One after the other, Tata Motors is unveiling its vehicles that proves that it is definitely one of the best automakers and the largest too in the country. The launch of Tata Indigo Manza recently is succeeded by the unveiling of Tata's Range Rover 2010 model on 3rd of November, 2009. The starting price of this latest launch – Range Rover 2010 Model is Rs 98.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Tata Motors had acquired Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from Ford Motor, the American automaker for about $2.3 billion in June, 2008.

In the month of June in this year (2009), Land Rover has launched its 3 models in India - Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover. Range Rover, already know for its sturdy built and amazing looks has been acclaimed worldwide. With enhanced driving dynamics and revolutionary interior technologies, the new Range Rover 2010 Model is sure to be considered as the most complete luxury 4x4 SUV.

Tatas eye Actis stake in Swaraj Mazda

MUMBAI: Tata Motors, the country's largest commercial vehicle maker, is exploring the possibility of buying the equity stake of private equity
major Actis in commercial vehicle and bus maker Swaraj Mazda (SML). ( Watch )

The Tatas move to look at Actis' stake - it owns 7.7% and another 9.3% through unit CDC - was triggered after the private equity major started considering exit options from its investment in Swaraj Mazda, which was made in 2004, for about Rs 370 crore, according to persons familiar with the matter. They spoke on condition that neither they nor their organisation be identified.

The Actis stake is also learnt to have attracted other auto majors and a Kolkata-based engineering firm, besides other private equity funds that are looking to enter the fast-growing Indian auto market, estimated to grow at 8-10% this fiscal year.

The potential buyers are currently looking at the 7.7% stake held directly by Actis. If the CDC stake is also sold then the buyer would have to make an open offer under India’s rules governing the takeover of companies. The eventual role of Tata Motors in Swaraj Mazda, if any, will depend on the intentions of Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo, which has a controlling 53.5% stake in the Punjab-based company.

A senior Tata Motors executive said the company was looking at various options to increase its share in the Rs 10,400-crore Indian LCV market, though he declined to comment on whether the company was interested in Swaraj Mazda.

A Tata Motors spokesperson said: “This is purely speculative, on which we don’t have any comments.” Actis India head JM Trivedi also refused to comment on the issue.

If Tata Motors does indeed pick up a stake, it will give the commercial vehicle maker access to the lucrative north Indian LCV market, a segment where it has comparatively weak presence, against its market shares in the western and southern Indian LCV market.

The deal, if it fructifies, will mean that along with an access to Isuzu technology, Tata Motors would also get to increase its presence in bus body-making, another major growth area. It may be mentioned that Tata Motors recently acquired the entire equity capital of Spain’s Hispano Carrocera, a global leader in bus and coach making.

Other large shareholders in Swaraj Mazda include Reliance Capital with an 8.5% stake. Tractor major Mahindra & Mahindra earlier held a minor stake in Swaraj Mazda through Punjab Tractors, which it exited early this year by selling its 14% stake to Japan’s Sumitomo.

Tata Motors, which sells the popular Ace model in various markets across the country, has a commanding 70% share of the Indian commercial vehicle market and has been looking at further consolidating its presence by extending its fastest-growing products into the northern region.

as the government looks at trimming duties on such vehicles.

Union minister for heavy industries and public enterprises Vilasrao Deshmukh said on Monday that his department plans to cut import duties on hybrid vehicles and will approach the finance ministry for the same.

“There is scope for changes in the duty structure and my department will recommend to the finance ministry to alter the high import duties levied on import of such vehicles.” Currently, import of all vehicles, including hybrid, attract over 100% in duties and taxes, making it highly expensive for Indian customers.

The government plans to lower import duty to encourage automakers to introduce more of these environment friendly cars. Eco-friendly vehicles help control emission of dangerous gases like carbon-dioxide and nitrous oxide. These vehicles are gaining popularity in Japan, Europe and the US.

Hybrid vehicles run on a blend of petrol and electric energy delivering high fuel efficiency. Honda was the first to launch the hybrid variant of the Civic sedan propelled by petrol-electric energy delivering over 20 km/litre. The car was priced Rs 23 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) while the petrol car variant that delivers 8-9 kilometres to a litre of fuel is priced Rs 12 lakh plus(ex-showroom Delhi).

Toyota Motor plans to bring its hybrid car Prius to India during the Auto Expo in January 2010. Operating on the same fuel-blend, the car runs over 22 kilometre/litre. General Motors has gone a step further and developed a zero-emission electric variant of the Spark compact car to be launched in 2010.

The government is working with the auto industry for a sustainable transport system which will not only lessen the impact of vehicular emissions on the environment but also attain greater fuel efficiencies.

Taking that forward, the government has already initiated a Hybrid Propulsion Programme Platform to help domestic car makers Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors & Mahindra & Mahindra to develop mini and full hybrid vehicle technology. The vehicles developed by these companies will be showcased at Commonwealth Games in October 2010

Google gave the first demonstration of its Chrome operating system today, at the same time opening the source code to the public. The company highlighted features that have grown out of what vice president of product management Sundar Pichai called "a fundamentally different model of computing." Unlike other operating systems, which merely incorporate the Internet, Chrome is completely focused on it.

Credit: Technology Review
The Chrome OS is based so aggressively on the Internet that devices running it will not even have hard drives, Pichai said, emphasizing that "every app is a Web app." All data will be stored in the cloud, and every application will be accessed through the Chrome browser. Because of this, he added, users will never have to install software or manage updates on the device.

The user interface closely resembles the Chrome browser. When the user opens applications, they appear as tabbed windows across the top of the screen. Users can stick their favorite applications to the desktop with one click, creating permanent tabs for them.

Pichai coyly demonstrated the way the Chrome OS can deal with competitors' file formats. He inserted a USB drive into a laptop running Chrome OS, launching a window that showed that the device contained several Microsoft Excel files. When he clicked on one of the files, the system automatically pulled up the Windows Live Web-based version of Excel, opening the file inside.

"It turns out that Microsoft launched a killer app for Chrome OS," Pichai said, adding that anyone who writes a Web application is writing an application for Chrome by default.

The effect, Pichai hopes, is "speed, simplicity, and security." Today's version of the operating system can boot up in seven seconds and open a Web application in an additional three, he said. Google engineers are working to make those times shorter.

The implications of the Web-focused design were spelled out more fully by Matthew Papakipos, engineering director for Chrome OS. Part of the security scheme for Chrome is that it's hard to make any unauthorized changes to the system, he explained. The root filesystem, which stores the core files needed to make software run, is stored in a read-only format. On top of that, every time the user boots the machine, Chrome OS verifies cryptographic signatures that ensure that the operating system software is properly updated, and matches the build Google has approved

Modi invites Maruti to set up plant in state

VADODARA: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday invited Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) to set up a car manufacturing facility in
Gujarat. Modi, after inaugurating the AGIDTR set up by the state government and MSIL here, said he wanted to give a business advice to Maruti. “Gujarat has General Motors and Nano, why not Maruti?” Modi said, pointing out that MSIL manufactures cars at Haryana which are then brought to Gujarat’s Mundra port for exports.

“Would any Gujarati make such a mistake? They (cars) should be manufactured and exported from here.” He added that with the construction of Mumbai-Delhi Industrial Corridor with active participation of Japan and arrival of a number of Japanese companies with a view to invest in Gujarat, MSIL should also establish their car unit in Gujarat. MSIL’s managing director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi on his part said that MSIL is expecting export business to further grow this year. “Last year, we had exported 70,000 units whereas this year we hope to exceed one lakh units,” said Nakanishi.

The car after its launch in the Indian market, will compete with the likes of Maruti’s Swift, Hyundai’s Getz and Tata Motor’s Indica. According to a Volkswagen official, the company would go for the B segment of the passenger car market, which incidentally is the largest in the country. The company sees further growth in this segment.

The car company Volkswagen is also planning to launch its Passat model in India, which will don a price tag of Rs 30 lakh. Passat may be rolled out of the Skoda Auto manufacturing facility at Aurangabad.
Volkswagen Polo is sold in Europe and other markets worldwide in hatchback, saloon, coupé and estate variants. There have been four separate generations of the Polo. Some generations were face lifted mid way through production, with the updated versions known again unofficially by an addition of the letter F to the model number, e.g. Mk IIF. There is considerable variation in Polo model designations, with some sources using Mk as equivalent to Series which causes confusion.
Key to Volkswagen India plans are two mass-market models that will be produced in large volumes in the company’s upcoming factory in Chakan. The first is the sixth-generation Polo (A06) hatchback that is under development and is expected in 2009.

crore. Bookings for the Ghost have begun though deliveries will start only in the first quarter of 2010.

Keeping in mind the pace with which the number of high networth individuals are growing in India, (those with cash or assets of over $30 million) currently around 1,000, Rolls Royce plans to sell 75 cars in 2010. Rolls Royce regional director for Asia Pacific Colin Kelly told mediapersons, ”We expect to sell 75 cars in 2010 in India, of which Ghost will comprise 50-60 units”.

Last year, the company had sold 15 cars from the Phantom family. Phantom is Rolls Royce’s luxury saloon priced over Rs 3.5 crore. The cost of customisation will be extra.

Rolls Royce’s interest in India comes after the company cut down production by 35% in 2009 due to the global meltdown. It sold 1,212 cars last year and may close the year at under 1,000 cars. Led by India and China, the Asia Pacific market is the fastest growing market for Rolls Royce, its sales grew 4% in the region this year to account for 22% of its global sales.

“We are looking at India’s long term potential,” Mr Kelly said.

cars

It is nothing but courage in the face of adversity. Indian carmakers, which saw their sales figures crashing to an eight-year low in the September-December quarter, will launch 50 new models this year in an attempt to revive their fortunes. The new launches are expected to inject some enthusiasm into the domestic car market, troubled by the economic uncertainties triggered by global recession.

The first to hit the market this year is M&M’s Xylo, touted as India’s answer to Toyota Innova. Designed and developed at M&M’s Nasik facility, Xylo was launched on 13th of January at an introductory price of Rs 6.24 lakh.

Next in the line is Fiat’s Linea sedan, launched on 15th January. Fiat, desperately trying to improve its India numbers, has launched petrol and diesel variants of Linea that will be pitted against Honda city, Maruti Suzuki SX4, Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Verna in the C-segment. This year will see a number of cars from the Fiat stable, including the Grande Punto hatchback and the Fiat Bravo premium hatchback.

The star attraction of the year will be Tata’s Nano that is likely to attract new customers. Tata Motors will also launch its crossover Indicruz and the new Indigo range, based on the Indica Vista platform, in the next few months.

Maruti Suzuki will launch its tall boy Ritz, known as Splash worldwide. Ritz will be powered by a KB series engine and will be positioned between A-star and Swift. Maruti may also launch a new utility vehicle (a variant of Jimny) and a fresh version of Alto.

Honda, enthused by the huge demand for the redesigned City, will launch its internationally successful model Jazz, that will be pitted against Skoda Fabia, Maruti Swift and Hyundai i20.

South Korea’s Hyundai Motors, which emerged unscathed from the sales slump, will launch its Avante sedan to replace Elantra. It will also bring its globally popular SUV Santa FE to India, apart from launching a refurbished Sonata luxury in January.

General Motors will join the small car bandwagon with a new compact car priced below Spark. It will also enter the premium sedan market with Cruze in the next few months and bring the automatic version of its Captiva SUV.

Europe’s largest-carmaker Volkswagen’s new factory in Maharashtra will roll out Skoda Yeti, Roomster and Fabia’s Combi variant. The company may also launch its small car Polo by the year-end.

French-Japanese combination Renault-Nissan may come out with a diverse portfolio, including Megane hatchback and Sandero sedan from Renault stable and Micra hatchback and Murano SUV from the Nissan portfolio.

For the super rich, BMW will launch its 7Series range, while Mercedes-Benz will bring its new E-Class, close on the heels of their international debuts. Also, Fiat may launch its luxury sports car Alfa Romeo 159, priced in the Rs 30-lakh bracket.

IBM working towards devloping computer like the human brain

At this year’s supercomputing conference, big brain IBM announced that they’ve made significant progress in creating a computer system that can actually simulate and emulate our own brain's ability for sensation, perception, action, interaction and cognition, while rivaling the brain's low power and energy consumption and compact size. What we’re talking about here is honest to goodness A.I. the capability of a computer system to learn and react to external stimulation and even think for itself. These advancements will provide a unique workbench for exploring the computational dynamics of the brain, and stand to move the team closer to its goal of building a compact, low-power synaptronic chip using nanotechnology and advances in phase change memory and magnetic tunnel junctions. Computer technology is making headways in all directions and the microchip is just becoming smaller and smaller.
With Nanotechnology also steadily becoming a reality things aren’t getting complicated but it seems like science fiction isn’t going to be fiction anymore. I’m all in favor of progress but if this can realistically come to pass, which it seems like it might and I know it was just a movie, but aren’t we bordering on a Terminator style scenario where IBM plays the key role of Cyberdyne Systems? Or worse still are we looking at the beginning of, dare I say it… the Matrix, or are we there already and just haven’t realized it.

Indian carmakers rejig Europe export plan

NEW DELHI: Indian car makers have revised downwards their export targets as governments in Europe have exhausted cash incentives for small
fuel-efficient cars.

Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki India that exports in large numbers was performing well largely due to this generous policy that lasted for eight months (February-September). During this period car exports jumped 32 per cent to 3.10 lakh cars over the same period last year.

Demand for A-Star, i10, i20 were the highest in Europe, which takes over 80 per cent of the cars shipped from India.

Countries like Germany, (the largest market for Indian cars) France, Spain, Italy, Austria.

UK, and Netherlands were offering cash benefits of up to 5,000 euros to buy new energy-efficient cars emitting lower carbon-di-oxide gas of up to 160 gms/km.

Now most of these countries have exhausted their budget and withdrawn benefits and only marginal markets like Netherlands and the UK continue to offer incentives on new cars.

Keeping the export potential in mind, Hyundai Motor India has re-jigged production and aims to export next year only 40 per cent of its made-in-India against 50 per cent that it ships currently.

Against the 2.8 lakh cars targeted to be exported during this fiscal year, Hyundai would ship around 60-70,000 cars less next year. Last month, Hyundai posted its first drop in exports (12 per cent) in three years for lack of demand from overseas markets.

Hyundai Motor India’s newly-appointed MD & CEO Han-Woo Park said, “We would focus on the domestic market to maintain our 21 per cent market share and production will be adjusted accordingly to take advantage of the buoyant demand.’’

Keeping the bleak export prospects in mind, Hyundai has shelved plan to set up a diesel engine facility in Chennai. It exports i10 and i20 in large numbers, most of which are diesel variants even though i10 diesel is not available in the domestic market. Besides it will shift part of i20 production to its plant in Turkey during the second half of the next year for better margins, tax benefits and labour issues in India.

Maruti Suzuki, India’s second largest car exporter, is looking at a sizeable drop in exports from next quarter as Europe, its largest market, has cut down on such incentives.

“There will be some rollover of the incentive from Europe till December. As most of the major markets like Germany, Italy and France have exhausted their cash inventive kitty, the next quarter will be tough for exports,” a senior Maruti executive said. Maruti has exported 80,283 cars in the first seven months of the fiscal .......and aims to export another 50,000 in the rest of the fiscal.

Indian carmakers enjoy higher margins and profits on cars sold abroad. Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki benefitted immensely from the global market’s gradual shift towards small fuel efficient cars emitting lower emissions. Profit margins on cars exported from India are almost double than the 8-9 per cent these companies get in the domestic market.

Global biggies to source parts from Nano vendors for low-cost models

NEW DELHI: Key component suppliers of Nano are set to reap the benefits of their low-cost technologies that made the world’s cheapest car a Making of Nano

reality, with global biggies such as Nissan-Renault , Toyota, VW and Honda approaching them for parts for their low-cost cars.

With as many as seven small cars lining up for Indian debut in the next two years, Nano’s 100-odd vendors are already cheering. Nano’s only direct competitor, Rajiv Bajaj’s $2,500 car, is expected to draw extensively from Nano vendor base.

“It would inevitably use (the Nano parts suppliers ). The project will source almost 100% from the Bajaj supply base, but many suppliers in that pool is also common to the Nano,” said a person with direct knowledge of the Nissan-Renault-Bajaj ultra lowcost car project, who asked not to be named.

Officials with ACMA, the apex body for the auto component industry, said carmakers, two-wheeler manufacturers and commercial vehicle companies were trying to halve the cost of their new products. All of them are looking at replicating the Nano experience in their products, said Jayant Davar, president of ACMA and vice-chairman and managing director of Sandhar Technologies.

“They are looking at launching their vehicles at lower prices than their existing range. But before they tie up officially, they want their components to be validated by their Japanese and other overseas parents,” he said.
Key component makers such as Bosch have already been approached. Bernd Bohr, member of the board of management at Bosch, had told ET NOW earlier that the Tata Nano project is giving Bosch a good entry point with other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that were thinking of the same segment.

A Delhi-based Nano supplier said he made presentations to some MNCs customers that wanted to use the technology developed for the Tata group’s small car. “Now they are sourcing components from us for their small cars that are slated for launch in the next 2-3 years,” he said, requesting anonymity.

Understandably, most vehicle makers deny they have anything to do with the Nano. From GM to Honda to Toyota to Volkswagen, the common response is that the small cars lined up for India will not be in the Nano category and will not be of the same quality. However, vendors say the Nano takeaway is not in replicating the same components but in replicating the processes that made the Nano so cost-effective .

India’s small car market, which comprises 80% of the 1.5 million units industry, will see a number of new launches in the next 14 months. Nearly all the big names of the auto world have announced fresh projects . Toyota is working on a platform for a small car with an investment of over Rs 3,000 crore.

Honda has also announced its first small car that will have India as the hub. Hyundai, which already has best-selling small cars such as the Santro, i10 and the Getz in the Indian market, has announced a new car positioned below the Santro with an investment of Rs 800 crore. VW’s Polo, GM’s Chevy Beat and Nissan’s Micra will debut in 2010. The Bajaj low-cost car is due in 2012.

The Google Phone is coming, The Google Phone is coming

The recent word is however, that Google does have a handset of their own up their sleeves. Although there’s not much information going around about the handset itself, it does seem like the device is quite real and a few are even hinting that it could be another HTC handset and could be called The Dragon or The Passion. HTC always had a flare for the names. But that’s also a bit premature as it’s not yet confirmed as to who the actual manufacturer of this device will be, though a few are speculating that it is a Korean company that will take up the challenge of building it. That still doesn’t make it any clearer of course. This will be a thoroughly Google branded device with all the goodies the search giant can throw into it, so I’m hoping. Nothing concrete so far so we’ll keep our ears peeled.

Ford Fusion named Motor Trend 2010 car of year

DETROIT: Ford Motor Co's Fusion mid-size sedan was named Motor Trend magazine's 2010 "car of the year" on Tuesday, adding to the perception that
changes to the No 2 US automaker's vehicle lineup are gaining traction.

The Fusion was chosen best of 23 new or significantly upgraded vehicles and the full range of Fusion models impressed the judges, from the four-cylinder entry level vehicles to the all-wheel drive sport and hybrid versions, Motor Trend Editor Angus MacKenzie said.

"Ford has proven its resilience in these tough times by delivering to market a car with broad appeal to a broad range of customers," MacKenzie said.

The Fusion, which has become one of the top 10 selling vehicles in the United States, was redesigned for 2010. Ford launched the Fusion in 2006 and it set its previous annual sales peak in 2007.

"What a proof point, to be named car of the year by one of the most rigorous tests in the world," Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally told reporters at Ford headquarters after MacKenzie announced the award.

Motor Trend tested the vehicles on acceleration, braking, handling, noise and responsiveness under various road and traffic conditions. It also considered design, fuel efficiency, safety and value.

Ford posted a nearly $1 billion third-quarter profit this month that surprised Wall Street analysts and is the only large US automaker not to reorganize in bankruptcy with US government support in 2009.

The automaker has said it expects to return to a solid profit in 2011 with a gradual recovery in the auto industry in the United States and key regions internationally.

US auto sales peaked at nearly 17 million vehicles in 2005 and have been falling since. Ford expects 2009 US auto industry sales of about 10.6 million units including medium and heavy trucks, or around 10.3 to 10.4 million light vehicles.

"We are cautiously optimistic that we are near the bottom right now," Mulally said of the US auto market.

Ford's shares reached a more than two-year high on Tuesday, a day after billionaire investor George Soros' hedge fund disclosed taking a 7.3 million share stake in Ford during the third quarter.

US 2009 sales of the Fusion were up 15 percent through October at 148,045 but trail Toyota Motor Corp's Camry and Honda Motor Co Ltd's Accord in the mid-size sedan segment, one of the key areas in the US market.

Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford has looked to set itself apart from U.S. rivals General Motors Co and Chrysler Group LLC, which reorganized under government-funded bankruptcies this year, and increasingly uses Toyota and Honda as benchmark competitors.

Sales of the Fusion have helped keep Ford's US sales declines for 2009 slower than the overall drop in the industry. Through October, Ford's U.S. sales are down 20.4 per cent for the year, while the industry is down 26 per cent.

Ford shares were up 15 cents, or 1.7 per cent, to $8.86 in Tuesday afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Earlier on Tuesday, the stock reached $9, a more than two-year high that is also a nearly 29 per cent increase since Ford posted its third quarter profit in early November.

Fiat set to drive in small car in 2011

KOLKATA: The prototypes of the first ever made-for-India car from Italian auto giant Fiat SpA will arrive in India in a year’s time for extensive
road trials. The results and feedback from the trials will lead to the final round of tweaking before Fiat India Automobiles Ltd begins manufacturing the small car at its Ranjangaon facility.

Fiat India president and CEO Rajeev Kapoor said the small car to be positioned between the A and B segments was already off the drawing board. “The small car - conceived for the Indian market - has been designed at Fiat’s legendary design studio in Turin. There are several steps between the drawing board to actual production-grade vehicles . The car will definitely be launched in 2011,” he said.

Sources said a clay model had already been prepared and prototypes were on the way. The engine, with a 700-1 ,000 cc capacity, has also been designed and is currently being tested in India to make suitable changes to adapt to the country’s driving conditions .

“We are adapting the engine to Indian specifications to ensure that it delivers optimum power and mileage,” said Roberto Dalmasso, manager at the engineering centre of Fiat Powertrain Technologies , a Fiat group company that develops powertrains for cars, trucks, boats and gensets.

in the next two years.

The firm, which has operations in India through a wholly -owned subsidiary, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, will manufacture the car, which will be smaller than the Santro, at its plant here.

"We are developing a small car and approximately Rs 800 crore will be invested at the Korean plant for development," newly appointed Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) Han-Woo Park told reporters.

He declined to give any details, but said: "It will be smaller than the Santro and the price will also be lesser. It will take at least 24 months from now to launch the car in India. Right now, it is in the design stage."

"Initially it will be targetted at India but gradually it will also be exported," Han-Woo added.

"It will be manufactured at the Chennai plant once the design gets completed," he said.

HMIL, which sells popular compact cars like Santro, i10, i20, has made India a small car hub for the Korean firm and has been exporting the cars to overseas markets.

In October, the company sold a total of 51,736 units, an 11 per cent growth compared with same month last year. Its exports, however, dipped by 11.9 per cent to 23,435 units during the month.

Michelin to set up Rs 4k cr unit in TN

CHENNAI: Coming as yet another big ticket investment attracted by Tamil Nadu in the auto sector — the global tyre giant, Michelin Group, France
signed an MoU with Tamil Nadu government on Monday for setting up its tyre manufacturing plant near Chennai. The project, with an investment of Rs 4,000 crore, will come up on 290 acres at the new Sipcot complex at Thervoy Kandigai, 50 km north of Chennai in Thiruvallur district.

The MoU was signed by state industries secretary MF Farooqui and Michelin Africa-India-Middle East president Prashant Prabhu before the state chief minister M Karunanidhi, deputy CM MK Stalin and senior officials.

“The manufacturing facility will focus on a range of radial\bus tyres. The plant will start operations in 2012 and will focus on the growing Indian market,” the company said in a statement. It will absorb 1,500 workers locally. It is learnt the plant will produce heavy commercial vehicles tyres, besides off-road heavy tyres fitted in construction equipment made by players like Komatsu, JCB, John Deere and Caterpillar. It is also understood that the investments could touch Rs 7,000 crore once the project takes off, considering the supplier chain that would be developed.

Apparently, Michelin would use TN as the centralised facility and to achieve economies of this scale, it could also consider shifting its existing plant in Maharashtra. Also, since the tyre mix has not been finalised, the plant capacity could not be ascertained.

Soon after inking the MoU, Mr Prabhu, who will be steering the newly- formed Michelin Tires India (Tamil Nadu), told ET: “We are attracted to TN both from the people and professional point of view. It has a very good manufacturing environment and offers multi-model connectivity. Besides the availability of good people and professionals, the state has a good educational system and recreational facilities.”

HDFC Standard Life to infuse Rs 300 crore more in 2009-10

HDFC Standard Life, the joint venture between HDFC and UK-based Standard Life, will infuse Rs 300 crore in the second half of the current financial year.

The private sector player had infused Rs 50 crore in the insurance firm so far in this financial year. The insurer expects to grow at 10 per cent in 2009-10.

“We are focusing on increasing our efficiency and productivity. We will not add any branch or recruit people in this financial year. We expect a growth of 10 per cent and will infuse capital as we write new business,” said HDFC Standard Life Principal Officer and Executive Director Paresh Parasnis.

Parasnis said that he expected the private players' new business premium collection to grow by 10-15 per cent. The new business income of the insurer dropped by 14 per cent to Rs 1,120 crore during the first six months of the financial year.

HDFC Standard Life had posted a loss of Rs 502 crore during 2008-09. The insurer, however, will break even by 2013. It aims to bring down the management expense to 20 per cent from 29 per cent last year, when the insurer was expanding heavily.

It launched a child plan, HDFC YoungStar Super, and a pension plan, HDFC Pension Super. In addition, it is planning to launch an endowment plan and a limited underwriting product with the maximum sum assured of Rs 20 lakh at a minimum premium of Rs 15,000. A limited underwriting product is sold without a medical test and taken on the face of declarations by the policyholder.

Looking at an initial public offer in 2010-11, the private sector insurer had started working on the valuation norm based on the market consistent embedded value.

The insurer expects the income from bancassurance to drop from 47 per cent last year to 40 per cent. The bancassurance tie-up with Bank of Baroda broke on November 2, 2009. At present, the insurer sells policies through HDFC, Indian Bank and Saraswat Bank

Rupee marginally up by 8 paise at 46.13/$

The Indian rupee inched higher by 8 paise to 46.13 against the dollar in early trade today, extending gains for the third straight day as the US currency dropped against major units.

Dollar selling by exporters also supported the Indian rupee.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local unit edged higher by 8 paise to 46.13 a dollar. Yesterday, the rupee ended 10 paise higher at 46.21/22.

Forex dealers said the US currency's losses against other major currencies and dollar selling by exporters, mainly helped the Indian rupee to strengthen.
